Which Pear to Pick

Williams' Bon Chretien

This medium sized pear, famous for its yellow colour when ripe is available from mid January to May. Williams ears are versatile and are ideal fresh as a snack, or for poaching, baking and slicing into salads.

 

Winter Nelis

Available from March to November the Winter Nelis pear is also known as the Quall or Honey Pear. Small to medium sized, its sweet flavour makes it ideal for cooking or bottling, and its delicious when eaten fresh.

 

Red Sensation

With a distinctive red and gold tone the Red Sensation pear is available from February to the end of May and is medium sized. The Red Sensation is perfect for desserts and fruit salads.

 

Corella/Forelle

The Corella pear is available from April to the end of October. Small to medium in size, Corella pears are great eaten fresh or try them in a salad.

 

Packham Triumph

Medium to large in size, the Packham is avilable from May to January. Its white flesh is firm but juicy with a rich flavour. When ripe, they turn a less intense green. They are ideal on their own as a snack, for baking, poaching, in tarts or for salads.

 

Beurre' Bosc

The Beurre' Bosc is availablefrom March to November, and is a medium to large pear. Sweet and juicy, its one of the best all-rounders for cooking. Beurre' Bosc pears are perfectbaked in tarts, pan fried or used in salads.

 

Josephine de Malines

The Josephine pear is renowned for its rich flavour and is one of the best pears for eating. Medium in size, the Josephine is avialable from April to the end of November.

 

Red Anjou

A medium sized pear, the Red Anjou is available from April to November. REd Anjou pears have a white, fine textured flesh which is perfect for salads.

 

Pears Cheese & Wine

Nothing complements a glass of wine and a cheese platter better than a few slices of fresh pear.

Try some of these great combinations or experiment with your own:

  • Packham, Camambert & Dry White Wine
  • Bosc, Mature Cheddar & Rich Red Wines
  • Red ANjou, Brie & Sparkling White Wines
  • Williams. Blue Cheese & Dessert Wines

 

Selecting and storing your pear

  • Pears soften best naturally in the fruit bowl, not the fridge
  • When pears are ripe, store them in the fridge to keep fresh
  • If your pears have become over ripe don't throw them out simply pop them in a soup or smoothie
  • Remember pears naturally have russet and marks which do not affect their delicious taste
